When Columbus set sail in 1492, he had little
idea where he was going, not to mention no idea of where he actually landed,
and Europe was a mere economic and political backwater that paled in comparison
to China and the robust Indian Ocean trade. Four hundred years later, Europe
was indisputably the most prosperous and politically powerful part of the
world. It had become the center of the world. What explains Europe’s dramatic
transformation? Write an essay that roughly traces the history of Europe throughout
this period and makes an argument about how Europe put
itself at the center of the world.
