Essay Two Assignment: “The Story of Stuff”
Write an essay based on the following research:
Choose a product that you use with some frequency (make a specific choice). Research your product in terms of the following: I have choosen Carotinos palm oil brand
a. Extraction: What resources are extracted to support manufacturing of your product?
b. Production: How is the product made, i.e., what is the process? Address resource needs, environmental impacts (including human health), and a history of production figures.
c. Distribution: Identify markets for your product and the means by which your product is distributed. What is the nature of the demand for the product? What resources (include energy) are needed for distribution? What impacts occur due to the nature of distribution?
d. Consumption: Who consumes your product? What are recent/current rates of consumption (include totals as well as subgroups and fluctuations by time of year, etc.). What are environmental and/or human health impacts of consumption?
e. Disposal: What are the byproducts of your product (all the way through the process, from extraction to consumption)? What waste is generated and how is it managed?
f. Is there a better way? Your conclusions should address whether there are environmental issues raised by the production, etc. of your product that could be addressed, and if so, what is the “better way”?
I welcome graphs, figures, maps, tables, etc. — any illustrative material that helps you present these data. This material is not part of the required length of the paper which must be a minimum of 4 written pgs. (not including the Works Cited page) and can be up to 6-7 maximum pages. Make sure you provide a ‘References Cited’ listing that is in MLA or APA format. Make sure you reference your material within the paper using this format (Smith 2013: 234).No refernce equals in paper equals an automatic zero on the assignment .
