Directions: The goal of the Ten Days in a Madhouse (Hereafter abbreviated as TDIAM) essay is to create an argument that compares the treatment or social stigma of mental illness in Nellie Bly’s time and in our time. The goal of this essay is to develop or further an awareness of how mental illness impacts us and society.
You may say to yourself that “I don’t have a lot of experience with the modern day equivalent of what Bly went through.” Well, that’s what our guest speaker is for!
You will choose an aspect, whether it is treatment or social stigma, in both Bly’s time and our time, then compare the two to create an argument of your choosing.
Consider the following for ideas:
✓ How Bly was treated before and after diagnosis.
✓ The diagnosis itself.
✓ The level of care given by nursing and hospital staff.
✓ Social stigmatization
You must use Bly’s novel as a source in this essay, by way of in-text citation, and you may use material discussed by the guest speaker.
