A special education teacher has many roles and responsibilities that vary based upon the classroom setting. Special education teachers may work in an inclusive classroom providing support, in a resource classroom with students who have a specific learning disability, or in a self-contained classroom with students who have moderate to severe disabilities. Regardless of setting, the educator serving moderate to severe students must be skilled in collaboration and communication and use these skills to advocate and ensure the individual needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities are met. These educators must also advocate for themselves based upon their assigned role in various classroom situations.
Complete the “Roles and Responsibilities Chart” to summarize the roles and responsibilities of special education teachers across different special education settings. Consider how you will use collaboration and communication skills to advocate for yourself and students with moderate to severe disabilities based upon your role within each type of classroom setting. Use the study materials and your research to assist with identifying best practices and completion of the chart. Document the use of the sources in the “References” section below the chart. When completing the chart, be sure to select a specific age range for students. This can be based upon the age range of the students you expect to work with in the Clinical Field Experience or on the grade range of students that most interests you. Upon completion of the chart, respond to the reflection prompts in 250-500 words.
