Kate is a senior Volleyball player at Pepperdine University in southern California. She is one of the top hitters in the country. In addition to their usual training for Pepperdine, her and her teammate Sarah had been training hard in preparation for joining the AVP(Association of Volleyball Professionals) Beach volleyball tour after their senior season. Kate and Sarah have been best friends and playing together since they were 14. Their announcement to join the tour, after winning an amateur tournament, created some buzz in the beach volleyball world. Kate is an only child and her parents are 100% supportive of her decision to join the professional tour. However, during the NCAA Tournament Kate suffered a torn Labrum, an injury often categorized as a SLAP lesion. After consulting with Sarah, her athletic trainers, her family and an Orthopedic Surgeon, Kate decided to undergo Arthroscopic surgery to repair her shoulder. Post surgery, after resting her arm in a sling for 4 weeks, she is impatiently waiting to start therapy. She is worried she may lose her momentum going into her first professional tour and hoping she can return to her former playing ability. At this point, the Surgeon and Physical Therapists have given her a 5 to 8 month recovery time to return to play and have suggested she will be even stronger when she returns – as long as she strictly adheres to the therapy regiment they plan to begin next week. If she can return in under 6 months, she has a chance to join the tour mid-season. In the meantime, Kate not only agreed, but insisted Sarah continue to train and compete with another player until she returns.
