For this essay in English 102, you will write a problem-solution essay, also known as a proposal.
According to Word and Image, proposal arguments are arguments that “call for some action to
be taken (or not taken). The challenge for writers is to convince [a specific group of targeted]
readers that they should take action, which usually involves their commitment of effort or
money” (245). You will identify a problem in one of the areas listed below and propose a viable
solution.
4. Identify an issue in your community—your hometown or your current location.
What is a major problem facing a particular demographic in that community—students,
parents, bicyclers, etc.? Be specific and narrow in your focus. (If you are not part of this
demographic, you may need field research for this option. If so, you may interview a
person from this demographic, but this interview will count as an “extra” source, not
toward your required number of library sources.) Think about how you might present
the issue and propose an equitable, viable solution to the community leaders.
