Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) to IDENTIFY and READ two (2) research or review articles published since 2000 in an academic research journal on your topic AND one (1) newspaper or magazine article or YouTube video on your TOPIC. The newspaper or magazine article should be from a well-known, widely read source such as: The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press, The Atlantic, U.S. News & World Report, Time, Newsweek, USA Today, Time, Teen Vogue, Huffington Post etc. If you are not sure it is a reputable source, ask me for approval.
3: Create a 14 (fourteen) slide PowerPoint presentation (to submit on BB Assignments).
4: Of those 14 slides follow this format:
Slide #1: Topic title, your full name, date, SOC 215, Spring 2022, Dr. David A. Kinney
Slide #2: General information from your first research article at top: title of article in quote marks (full citation of article goes on Slide 14); below a set of bullet points of how many youth did they study, what ages, where were they from, what research methods did they use?; characteristics and extent of the problem e.g., what percent of American youth are involved in this behavior; what specific types of youth (e.g., age, gender, race, social class differences); consequences for youth and/or society.
Slides 3, 4 and 5: Specific information from your first research article; specific findings from the research, what is most interesting, surprising, important from your point of view? What are the main arguments and recommendations are the authors making? What kinds of programs are working for these types of youth? What programs are not working? How do they know? How can we reach more youth facing this problem? If applicable: Features and goals of the prevention, intervention or treatment program.
Slide 6: same as Slide 2 above from your second research article
Slides 7, 8 and 9: same as Slides 3, 4, & 5 above based on your second research article
Slide 10: General information about your newspaper or magazine article or YouTube video; title of article/video, where was the information collected, website of video, types of youth focused on and type of adversity they are facing.
Slides 11, 12 & 13: Specific information from your magazine or newspaper or video; specific findings from the research, what is most interesting, surprising, important from your point of view? What are the main arguments and recommendations are the authors making? What kinds of programs are working for these types of youth? What programs are not working? How do they know? How can we reach more youth facing this problem? If applicable: Features and goals of the prevention, intervention or treatment program.
Slide 14: References: (A) list of your two research articles and (2) your one magazine or newspaper or video website to include: title of article in quotes, source in italics, year published, pages, & link; for a video: title, producer, link to article and date accessed.
NOTE: For research article you can insert a table of research results on a slide showing their findings.
NOTE: For all your sources you can include a one or two quotes from the author; make sure to use quote marks and the author, year and page number in parentheses at the end of the quote.
NOTE: From your magazine or newspaper article you can include a picture on half of a slide from the article.
