Step 1 Choose a social determinant of health from the list below and explain why it’s important to address this SDOH in the US’s response to COVID-19. You can choose from the following:
• Racism
• Anti-immigrant sentiment/fear of deportation
• Violence against Women and Girls
• Social Support Research your topic
-including the social determinant of health, your target population, and health outcomes of COVID-19- and create a PowerPoint for your social media followers explaining how your SDOH impacts/is impacted by COVID-19 and how to address the SDOH as part of the US’s COVID-19 response.
Your presentation should be about 5-6 slides. they should cover:
• Attention Getter. Grab the audience’s attention with an interesting story, news headline, etc. Do not start with “Hi, I am xx and this is what I am talking about today” because that is not an attention-getter. Do the attention-getter first to draw in your audience, then introduce yourself and tell them what you will talk about.
• What? What is the definition of your social determinant of health? (for instance, if your SDOH is racism, what is the definition of racism?). This definition should come from our lessons, i.e. do not use a dictionary! To receive full points, you must integrate what we learned in class.
• How many? What is the prevalence of your social determinant of health in your population? Is it increasing/decreasing? Who is most impacted?
• How many? What are the statistics on the health outcome (COVID-19) in your population? How does this compare to the United States as a whole?
• How? How does your SDOH impact COVID-19, either in terms of being able to social distance, getting tested, or outcomes such as death or complications? Discuss two pathways.
• Action Steps. What are two solutions you recommend to address the social determinant to
improve the COVID-19 response? (Note: the solutions should focus on the program or policy. They should not be focused on “raising awareness” or health education alone.)
