MIDTERM EXAM
Answer one of the questions from each group below. That is, you must answer a total of two questions and you may only select one question from each group.
Your answer must be between 3 and 4 pages long PER question for a total of 6-8 pages. You should use 12 point font and double space (or 1.5 space if you feel you want to say more about it). Make sure your name and student id are at the top of the first page. You should answer both of the questions you choose in one document, but clearly indicate where your second answer begins.
Do not refer to any materials other than the lectures and those materials assigned in the class. You must refer to the appropriate assigned readings/lectures in each answer. You can refer to them with embedded cites for example: (Smith 2017) or (4/26 lecture). There is no need for a “works cited” page. The assignment is due by 4:00 pm on Wednesday May 4th. No late assignments will be accepted. This is a thought piece that should demonstrate your ability to analyze and process the information from the course. You must turn your answer in through canvas. The exam is worth 40 points which is 40% of your grade for the course. Each question you choose is worth 20 points. All work must be your own and you may not collaborate with others in any way. The rules on academic integrity will be strictly enforced.
Answer 1 question from each group below:
GROUP 1
a)Explain the arguments made in Federalist 10 and Federalist 51. Explain whether these arguments are consistent.
b) How and why do some countries make the judicial branch independent? Make sure you give specific examples.
GROUP 2
a) Agree or disagree with the following statement and make sure you fully explain your answer and give specific examples to support your assertions:
The content of the Constitution was the result of negotiations among those in attendance at the Constitutional Convention. It reflects the political deals struck at that time and the social and political realities of the time. It is sometimes ambiguous or unclear. Accordingly, since the beginning, it has been necessary to interpret the document to determine how to rule in the cases before the Supreme Court.
b) Agree or disagree with the following statement and make sure you fully explain your answer and give specific examples to support your assertions.
Because the Justices that serve on the United States Supreme Court are not only appointed for life, but also can rule that a law passed by the Congress and signed by the President is unconstitutional, the fact is the Supreme Court is actually the most powerful branch of government.
