Watch this video as an introduction to making hard choices by Ruth Cheng
1) Paul points out the three dimensions that pose a challenge for rational choice. Explain one of these dimensions in your own words and what prompts you to agree or disagree with Paul’s reasoning about why this is a challenge to making a rational choice.
2) Cheng talks about the difference between quantitative value versus qualitative value. What is the difference? Which kind of value is Paul discussing in her chapter?
3) Cheng talks about creating reasons to make a hard decision and choosing who we want to be. She says there are no reasons ‘out there’ that help us make these hard decisions, we have to make these choices for ourselves. Paul talks about the trade off between making a hard decision based on who you are currently and your preferences now versus based on your future self’s preferences. Paul uses the idea of ‘maximizing utility’ to make a decision, but this leaves us with an unsatisfactory conclusion about the choice we have to make. Are Paul’s and Cheng’s ideas compatible or in opposition? Explain your reasoning on why you believe what you do.
