Discuss what makes good leadership in a specific (minority) population. Analyse and compare what leadership styles and power bases are appropriate and what are the pros and cons of the various different styles and approaches in the given leadership population. Use two concrete examples in your analysis one effective and one ineffective leader: compare and contrast them.
Steps in the process:
(1) Chose one specific population from the list below:
o Women
o Generation Y or Z
o A chosen national culture, or cultural cluster (ex: Arabic, Scandinavian, Latin American, etc…)
o A chosen industry/ sector which has some specific leadership requirements (such as start-ups; charity organisations; political organisations; NGO, etc.)
(2) Chose two concrete examples within your population (two female leaders / two GenY leaders / two leaders from the same, or different cultures, etc.) You will need to compare and contrast them using course relevant concepts. Chose two leaders in comparable settings. That is, there should be some common elements in the two situations to make it possible to focus on the differences in leadership style and power bases. For example, you could compare two business leaders in different countries or two Gen Y leaders in different businesses, etc.
Here is a list of potential questions you may focus on in your analysis:
• Leadership style and behavior that might be sought for or regarded as effective in the given population
• Important characteristics (traits, skills) that might be sought for or regarded as effective in the given population
• How can leaders gain and exercise power in your given population? How can these power bases be effectively used?
• How can leaders be effective communicators?
• In what other situations would they most likely succeed or fail? In what cultures?
