Assignment: In class we will discuss several articles that address the debate surrounding how
college campuses should address incidents of hate speech. For your fourth formal paper
assignment, you will join this ongoing debate by taking a position on this issue. Your paper
should develop and support your argument using reasoning and evidence; you should engage
with at least one source drawn from our course readings and at least two sources from the
additional resources page. Your final draft should be four to five pages.

developed in four to five pages
-To support and develop your argument by integrating, explaining, and analyzing relevant textual
evidence; you must incorporate evidence from at least three sources and explain how each piece of
evidence furthers your argument
-To position your argument within an ongoing critical debate by responding to and evaluating three
critical articles and by acknowledging an opposing viewpoint
-To construct an organized and coherent essay with a clear organizing principle, clearly focused body
paragraphs with topic sentences, and effective transitions between paragraphs
-To write clearly in a tone and style appropriate for the assignment; prose should be clear, easy to follow,
and free of any distracting grammatical and/or spelling errors
-Your paper should follow the MLA guidelines for proper documentation and citation of all source
materials, be between four and five double-spaced, typed pages, and include a creative and interesting
