If you have ever had to plan a large event (or wedding), you know that the hardest part is the seating
chart. Creating a seating chart requires you to know a great deal of information about your guests (social status, family background, character, friends, interests, etc.) and to place people next to each other in a way that makes sense for conversation/to avoid conflict. For the final project, I am asking you to apply this type of analysis to the works that we’ve read this semester.
You are planning an event (I will let you decide what kind) and you must invite EIGHT characters or authors from the works that we have read this semester.
You must include a write up that is at least 750 words and 200-word character descriptions for EACH person invited.
The write up should include:
1. An explanation of the event that you are holding.
2. An explanation of who is sitting where.
3. Justification for why each person is where they are in relation to those around them.
4. Direct quotes/evidence from the text for your descriptions with page numbers.
The character summaries must be at least 200 words and include:
1. The name of the character, the work they are from and the date of that work (time period).
2. A description of their physical appearance and relative age (if you know it).
3. Their social standing (economic position, job, race, gender, nationality, etc.)
4. Their domestic situation (marital status, who do they live with, dependents, etc.)
5. Why you are inviting them to this event/what they contribute: are they here because of their
personality? Because they might bring a good gift? Because of their social standing in the community? Because they make evoke interesting conversation? Because you want to know a secret that only they know? Etc.
