The topic for this week’s discussion is moral courage and the concept of malpractice.
“In one case, following a physician’s order to discharge a patient did not shield a nurse from partial liability for the patient’s death. A patient who complained of severe abdominal pain was diagnosed as having a urinary tract infection, and a discharge order was given by the physician without a physical examination. The nurse was concerned about the discharge order enough to consult with the nursing supervisor but took no further action. A few hours after discharge, the patient was readmitted with a ruptured appendix, developed adult respiratory distress syndrome, and eventually expired” (Westrick, 2014, p. 31). Was this an issue of staffing, lack of moral courage, or organizational structure?
