Purpose: This assignment affords students assigned to a group, to learn more about a clinical/addictions and evidence-based interventions in action. Groups will be tasked to develop a “Therapeutic Tools List” and discuss two evidence-based theories which can be used to help someone with and an addictions diagnosis. This project will build upon and enhance the understanding of coping skills, evidence based therapeutic techniques, and application of theories.

Description: Students will meet as a group to develop a therapeutic tool list of 25 coping skills which have worked or will work for some when they are trying to abstain. If you have used anything at this point it may be a good opportunity to draw from your current experience. In many cases, you can share coping techniques without sharing what you have given up.
Review the literature and discuss five of the coping skills from your list in detail and what theories/therapy support those coping skills. Ex. Dialectal Behavior Therapy – Mindfulness – going for a walk. Going for a walk is on your list and it can be used as a mindfulness exercise, which is part of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
The APA (no abstract needed) paper should include:
list the 25 coping mechanisms
name what theory or therapy is related to each on your list
not all may have a theory or therapy foundation (this would be rare)
the list can be numbered in the body of the paper
ex. 1. Going for a walk – Mindfulness – DBT
review the literature and discuss 5 in detail
include what theory or therapy it is based on
connect the coping mechanism with the theory or therapy
citing at least five (5) recent, relevant scholarly journal articles.
minimum of two therapies or theories should be discussed
a theory or therapy may have multiple coping mechanism from your list
