You will identify one paragraph (or several sentences) for closer analysis. You will begin class by contextualizing the paragraph (explaining what happens right before it in the novel). Then you will present a close reading to the class. This close reading must identify literary devices in order to give us a deeper understanding of the content. You may not just talk about how this passage offers insight into themes or character development. It is essential that you analyze the writing style (word choice, grammar, punctuation, figurative language) and connect this stylistic analysis to your thoughts about themes, character, and other “big picture” ideas.
