The first part is 3 pages then the second is 2 pages.
Prompt: 3 pages
Demonstrate
the way that the purpose of The King of Hearts is promoted by its
use of comic conventions and specific formal techniques. Please include these components in your
essay:
1) Give
a brief description of the film, in your own words and identify the social
contexts that give rise to the purpose of the film. This involves naming those particular
conflicts and contradictions, issues and ideas that are at play in the world of
the film. Clearly state the purpose as
you see it.
2) Choose
three formal contexts that you find most striking and relevant. You may choose from the list above, but you
are not limited to that list. Describe
how these techniques support the values and ideas promoted by the
filmmakers. Be specific. Describe specific scenes and explain the way
in which these scenes, in which these techniques are used, contribute to the
overall meaning of the movie.
Extra Labor
Please write a two-page response to one of these questions:
1) When
Plumpick tries to explain to Hyacinth that she is in danger from the soldiers
on their way to her town (and war in general) she replies “tell them I’m
harmless.” The inmates certainly seem harmless; in their refusal to
understand such crucial structures as war and commerce and linear time, they
seem as innocent as young children. In
what way might we see the inhabitants of the asylum as threatening or
dangerous?
2) King of Hearts begins by putting the
viewers inside a clock and continues to focus on the concept of Time. What does the movie have to say about the way
we live our lives from birth to death bound by time – and what does it say
about possible alternatives?
3) As
the song goes – What’s Love Got To Do With It?
or, as another tune has it: A
Love Supreme. What role does Love play
in King of Hearts?
