GLOBALIZATION SCAVENGER HUNT PHOTO ESSAY
For this final project, students will complete a globalization photo essay. The purpose of this project is to identify globalization in our local contexts and everyday lives. For this field project, students will need to identify regions of the world that they encounter in their local community. Then each student will need to find a location that matches each of the selected regions. Next, students will identify two course concepts that correspond with that region and describe how the place they selected match these concepts.
Students will be looking for 7 locations, and then describing that location using two concepts from the course/readings.
Once you have found a place that qualifies for a category, take a few photos of the place to properly document the place. Be sure that at least one of those photos per location is a selfie with you in it. Once you have taken a photo of the place, you will need to define, in your own words, what the category means and why your chosen place “fits”. Please do not use the same place for more than one category. For example, if you use a particular park for “Europe” do not use the same park for “The Pacific.” (NOTE OF CLARIFICATION: YOU WILL NEED DOCUMENTARY PHOTOS FROM EACH LOCATION AND A SELFIE IN EACH LOCATION SHOWING THAT YOU ACTUALLY VISITED THE PLACE.)
In general, no photos should be taken from the internet. All photos should be your work. If you have trouble accessing a digital camera or phone for this project, please be in touch right away and I will try to help you get your hands on something to take pictures.
Format of the photo essay.
Using Google Docs of Google Slides (or other word/presentation software), CHOOSE SEVEN of the categories below to explore in more detail and document through photos and discussions. Title the page and use the headers below to title each section. Then add the photos to your word document. Each “entry” into your project should have these four components: (1) Title, (2) photos that both document the place and show that you were there, (3) description of the region and explanation of two concepts associated with it, (4) discussion of why your chosen location fits the concepts.
The most important part of this assignment is the discussion and analysis of why your chosen location fits the chosen category. Each written analysis should be at least 200 words. Often it will take much more to describe and analyze your place.
