Ways to improve awareness of the importance of ambulation for patients in post op units.
At our hospital, we have many post op c-section patients, in our admission teaching we always discuss the importance of ambulating and moving in general in the recovery process. We address the risks involved post op as well as the benefits of ambulating in pain control and recovery. The issue is in the fact that the patient is typically drowsy from delivery and medication upon arrival to the unit and retains very little of the initial education. Possibly adding documentation or posters on the door or bedside to remind patients and families of the importance of ambulation in the recovery process will prompt more attention to following through. Patients typically are resistant to move in the first day or so due to soreness and exhaustion, however ambulating is still an important part of the process. Further education could encourage these resistant patients. Including a collaboration of team members such as the OB, nurse, tech and PT if necessary (case to case) to encourage and increase time up out of bed walking will assist in improving outcomes and patient satisfaction. According to Nursing Leadership & Management: Leading and Serving, high -performance teams are essential to implementing quality improvement (Whitney, 2018). Using a postoperative binder may assist in further pain control while supporting the abdominal incision, the binder will also provide increased support to the core muscles as moms attempt to regain upright position post op (Tussey, et al., 2019).
