-Individual papers using a case
study topic as a lens to consider the problem of epistemic crisis. I will
approve all topics in advance, but you have pretty wide range here to focus on
examples of a conspiracy theory, disinformation or propaganda campaign, changes
in technology or the media that affect public discourse, and more. Whatever
topic you choose, your ultimate job is to use your case study to analyze and
make an argument about the broader topics of information warfare and epistemic
crisis. Papers must be grounded in examples, readings and at least five cited
sources, including two analytical sources.
–You need to pick a topic that says something about information warfare and how it is affecting broader society, either in terms of culture, politics, or social interaction. It has to be a topic that will allow you to explore the ideas this class is based around.
-don’t phone in your analysis of what’s been going on by blaming “The Media,” without being very specific about what you’re talking about. The media is not a monolith, and blaming it is not the magical answer to a problem as complex as what we face. It’s usually an intellectually lazy way out of actually thinking through these problems. Push yourselves beyond using that as a crutch.
-These papers are analytical essays exploring the meaning of the topic you’ve chosen, meaning that you’re making an argument, but basing it on research that explains your case study.
