Assignment Task: We’ve spent the semester analyzing the structure and global themes of other writer’s arguments and
stories. Now it’s your turn to write a thesis-driven argument that presents a position about a global problem/situation by
effectively utilizing rhetorical appeals, literary devices, and research. Each point you make must be supported with relevant
evidence/examples and sound reasoning.
Rhetorical Situation: You have been invited to present a paper on a global issue during Prairie View’s annual B-Global
Student Research Showcase, which students and professors from all over the A&M system attend to hear current ideas from
students on a wide-range of topics that affect the world today. Your audience will be comprised of high-achieving students
and professors, so your audience is intelligent, well-read, and interested in world affairs.
Topic: Select a topic from the menu of choices on the United Nations website. Your topic must be global. Topics that are off-
limits include: abortion, legalizing marijuana, and human trafficking.
Length and Format: The paper should be at least 2,000 words and should not exceed 2,600 words. (One double-spaced
page of 12-point Times New Roman font is about 300 words, so it should be between 7 and 9ish pages.) It should be
formatted according to APA guidelines with a full References list numbered as the final page.
Sources: The paper must include a References page listing at least FOUR sources that are cited within the paper and used in
significant ways to develop the paper’s argument. Two of these sources must be academic/scholarly, but the other two do
not; although, they do need to be credible and substantial based on the guidelines for evaluating sources presented in this
course.
