The purpose of this paper is to connect individual experiences within a society to broader sociological theories and concepts. Here, you describe how your sexuality (and gender) affects your self-identity, romantic/familial/social relationships with others, and relationship to other societal institutions such as education, the labor market, religion, and the family, in terms of privilege and/or disadvantage, using the key topics and concepts learned from the textbook chapters. If you are not comfortable with sharing your own personal story for any reason, then it is okay to write about an anonymous other’s story that you know in depth
I know this instruction sounds a little bit abstract and vague, but I do this on purpose because I want to make this assignment just a very flexible, free, and experimental essay that gives you a lot of room for reflecting on your own life/thoughts about sexuality. For example, you can pick a few sociological topics from the textbook chapters (such as gender, class, inequality/priviledge, activism, media, school, workplace, religion, family, health, violence…) and explain how these topics are relevant to your experiences/thoughts about sexuality, or you can just write a personal autography/history about sexuality or self-identity. It is best that you cite some concepts or theories from the textbook chapters. Sociology of Sexualities is the name of the textbook, it should be the only source referenced.
