Section 1 (2-3 pages): Analyzing the key themes of the readings. You were assigned readings
by Ruby Payne and Bomer et al. You should unwrap the major themes of each work (use a
sub-header and analyze each in 1-2 pages). I want you to frame the key ideas and incorporate
several quotes from each to show you have read/understood them. Tell me what they are
about and conclude with how each book deals with key issues of intercultural communication.
Section 2: Intercultural Competence. Intercultural competence is the ability to communicate
appropriately and effectively with folks from different cultures. In this section, of your paper
spend ~2 pages explaining how the ideas from the books contribute to a greater sense of
intercultural competence. Feel free to rely on the various lectures from the term to guide your
analysis. You want to say something meaningful about what intercultural competence really
means in the context of the readings and our course themes.
Section 3: Conclude the Course
I want you to zoom out (go big picture) and reflect on the course as a whole. Use the course
metaphors to say something about the themes you learned about this semester. Wrap up the
semester and reflect the following kinds of questions?
-Why do we study intercultural communication?
-How can improve intercultural competence?
-What are the goals of this particular course in the study of intercultural communication?
