For your research paper, you will explore key issues of our course in a foreign country of your choosing. First, you will select a non-Western country to focus on (this excludes North America and Europe). Then, you will conduct research that investigates how the media in your chosen country (i.e. film, TV, popular music, social media, etc.) relate to broader aspects of globalization, as discussed in course lectures and readings. The following questions will help to guide you through the research process:
In what ways does the country’s media reflect the influence of Western cultures, particularly the U.S.?
In what ways does the country’s media reflect hybridity with local cultural traditions and/or resistance to Western influence?
Rather than trying to cover every aspect of your chosen country’s media, your presentation should focus on a small number of specific topics (around 2-3 total) that support your overall discussion about media and globalization. Suggested topics include:
Popular music and local/global hybridity
Television formats and local/global hybridity
Filmmaking and local/global hybridity
Social media and local/global differences
The paper must be a minimum of 1500 words, not including the bibliography. For a double spaced paper written in Word, this will roughly translate to around 6 pages of text. Please make sure to check the word count before submitting the paper to ensure that it meets the requirement.
A separate bibliography must also be submitted, listing a minimum of 6 original written sources. In addition, you are also required to reference at least 3 different required course readings/chapters in your paper.
