Assignment:
Select ONE of the categories below (American Recipes, American Fashion, American Advertising, or Women in America) and follow the directions. Because this is a U.S. History course, please focus only on one of these topics as it pertained to women in the U.S.
Research and cite at least three (3) scholarly sources. In answering the questions on your topic, you must cite at least two (2) primary sources (a source created during the time you’re examining) , and one (1) scholarly source (e.g. your textbook, JSTOR, EBSCO, ProQuest, etc. – NO Wikipedia, internet blogs, non-academic sources). Include images of the items you are analyzing
In all categories, QUESTION #4 IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. Spend the majority of your time on that one and give SPECIFIC examples!
There is no min./max. page number for the assignment. You will include the numbered questions, in bold font, followed by your answers, no in bold font. Answers may vary anywhere from a paragraph to a few, depending on what you find in your research.
To Earn Full Credit:

Ensure the items you choose to evaluate are through the lens of American history
Type in Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced between lines, appropriate margins
Appropriately answer all portions of each question

Categories:
Recipes in the U.S.
Select two (2) recipes, found in American recipe books each the same dish but from a different decade, and compare them answering the questions below. The recipes don’t have to be originally American dishes, per se, but the author of the recipe should have lived in the U.S. Here is a link to a database of cookbooks from the 1700s through the early 1900s. http://digital.lib.msu.edu/projects/cookbooks/ (Links to an external site.). If you want to compare a more modern recipe you may use a more recent cookbook but at least one of your recipes must be more than 40 years old.

Choose two (2) decades to compare American women’s fashion (the fashion doesn’t have to have been originated in the U.S., but you want to evaluate how certain fashions were worn or advertised in the U.S.)

b. How do you plan to compare them: What elements or aspects of the two decades do you plan to look at?
Why did you pick this particular topic and these particular decades?

Advertising in the U.S.
Choose two (2) decades to compare American magazine advertisements.

c. What does the advertising tell you about the way women were viewed during that particular time period?

Women in the U.S.
Choose two (2) American women who have been significant in U.S. women’s history, each from a different time period, and compare them using the questions below. War propaganda ads from World War I & II are off limits as we already did an analysis of those in the class.

b. How do you plan to compare them: What elements or aspects of the two decades do you plan to look at?
Why did you pick this particular topic and these particular women?

b. How are they different?
c. What can you tell about them by analyzing your primary sources?

a. What do the commonalities and differences tell us about the time periods during which these women lived?
b. What was happening with women in general during your chosen time periods?
c. How were these women significant?
d. And how was their significance restrained or enhanced by the prevailing view of women at the time?
e. Were there external influences at play (immigration/labor/suffrage campaigns/wars/availability of materials/etc)?
