JOURNAL REFLECTION

Journal Reflections – Content:
Write a 250-350 word response (equivalent to approximately one page, double spaced) to that reflects on and critically engages the readings assigned for our Wednesday class discussions. These are due every Tuesday night.
What should a journal reflection be like?
To “critically engage,” or to be “critical,” in this context does not necessarily mean to disagree. It means that you’re carefully examining what the author is saying, and reflect on it. This can include:
Most important! Show that you understand the overall position or argument of the author by beginning with a brief characterization or summary of it (1-2 sentences). Usually you will begin with this. You should not summarize the whole article/chapter/film. DO include the author’s last name when referring to a text.
Focus on a specific portion of the text. This can be a theme we discussed in class and/or anything from the reading that interests you. You may quote the text (use “p. 5” for example), or refer to a passage (“pp. 7-8” for example).
REFLECT: Build off of or diverge from the text and it’s argument by bringing in your thoughts. Reflect: Is this topic new to you, and if so do you find it surprising? Why? Do you agree with the author? Disagree? You can challenge the overall argument or a portion of it if you’d like to.
Personal Response? Did this reading bring up anything for you personally? Feelings, reactions, a connection to your life?
You can also pose a question.
