PHIL 3210: Latin American and Caribbean Philosophy
Final Essay
This assignment should be no longer than 6 pages, use twelve point font, and one inch margins.
All citations should be from the readings we have covered in class, and there should be no more
than four direct citations in the body of the paper (parenthetical citations have no limit), and
please use Chicago style footnotes and bibliography (please note that the link below shows two
forms that one can use in Chicago style: “footnotes and bibliography” and “author-date,” either style
is acceptable)

Please answer the following prompt:
If there is a philosophy specific to the Caribbean, then give some general account of its social
historical context. That is, if every philosophical tradition is rooted in a particular location and
culture, give some account of what this is for the Caribbean and its similarity and difference with
Latin America. In addition, if Aime Cesaire and Frantz Fanon are some of the central figures in
Caribbean philosophy, then give some account of their arguments, the key concepts they deploy,
and highlight a key difference in their style or mode of argumentation.

The paper will be graded with the following criteria:
1. Thesis and introductory paragraph (10pts)
2. Explanation of Caribbean specificity, and its difference and similarity with Latin America
(10pts)
3. Aime Césaire (10pts)
